I am happy to post that Michael Franti is recovering following emergency surgery to remove his ruptured appendix last week and appears in good spirits. He posted this photo of his guitar, apparently that “ machine heals burst appendixes”.
I first heard Franti and his band during my travels in Thailand when a couple of guys descended on the beach blaring music from their boombox. My initial irritation gave way to curiosity when they chose to play tracks from the brilliant ‘Stay Human’ album, I didn’t stick around for much of their “set” but the tracks I heard left a particular impression.
The brain has a weird way of storing information and when I got back one of the first things I did was google what I remembered of the lyrics of ‘Oh My God‘. Since then I have explored his releases enjoying Franti’s socially conscious spoken word delivery and the bands eclectic forays into funk, soul and jazz territory.
I am eagerly awaiting new material and future London shows but until then the focus is on Michael making a quick recovery. His music has an undeniable feel good factor and hopefully some of will rub off on him.
