In a recent podcast, Michael Stipe said that Battles literally blew him away in a way he hasn’t been in years. If you’ve ever heard the demo to R.E.M‘s ‘Beat A Drum‘, you know this is man who I can trust when he is blown away.
The most likely place you would’ve heard this band is on the Honda advert a few months. It rather lends itself nicely to the manic, mechanic, obscure imagery, led by an engine-like bassline and tribal floor toms. The video is gorgeously simplistic.
‘Atlas‘ is constantly brewing and bubbling and you’d expect at any moment, the glass cube the band are playing in to explode. It’s math rock but it’s surrealistic making this band intriguing and unpredictable. It’s over the top and super over indulgant, but that’s what makes it so exciting.
