Angel Haze shows no sign of stopping the momentum she has gathered this year releasing her new mixtape ‘Classick‘ last week. This is the follow up to this summer’s ‘Reservation EP‘ which catapulted the young artist further into public perception with her no holds barred rapping juxtaposed with a rich singing voice. Still when Haze gets her teeth into something, such as on the brilliant ‘Werkin’ Girls’, her flow completely rips her contemporaries apart.
‘Classick’ sees her rhyming over some choice cuts from the likes of Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, and Lupe Fiasco. The very fact that she has the audacity to record over these classics could be a talking point but Haze deftly pulls this off.
However the track everyone will inevitably focus on is the closer “Cleaning Out My Closet“. Whereas Eminem‘s version offered a tough version of the Detroit rappers dysfunctional upbringing Angel Haze takes the cleaning out my closet theme to the next level with the gritty details of the child abuse she suffered and how it affected who she she is now.
Despite the grim subject matter the end result is nothing but cathartic with the female rapper proclaiming “Yeah, there’s a story behind every single scar that I show, I made it out, this a me nobody’s gotten before, I had to open my wounds, I had to bleed til I stopped it, thanks for joining me here as I cleaned out my closet“.
With an impressive body of work behind her already Angel Haze is an artist whose next step we eagerly.
