AmatrArt is a youthful Glasgow 5-piece offering an exciting take on what would once have been loosely labelled alt-rock. The recently released double a-side single “Mirror/Soft Skin” is a genuine 1-2 knockout with both tracks offering melodies by the truck load, massive dynamic shifts and a confidence that belies their age.
“Soft Skin” takes some of the quirks that made us love Alt-J‘s debut a few years back and focuses it with a magnifying glass. Frontman Jonathan Mullen‘s quasi-falsetto floats gorgeously over a sweeping melody that build and builds.
It’s great to see the next generation of artists returning to a slightly noisier and more ballsy guitar sound (I’m including Bones Garage who we featured last week in this category) which had slightly fallen by the wayside in recent years.
