Introducing Rory McVicar

Rory McVicar seems to come from that same artistic gene pool as composers like Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver. Strong, raw songwriting ravaged by highly creative and experimental arrangement that gives the songs a whole world to live in.

Alone I’ll Be‘ is McVicar‘s latest single was a joy to listen to. A subtle guitar and bass groove, effected drums and a vocal line to die for.

What makes you human in the end“, McVicars chimes. It is the human quality on this wonderful track that makes it stick out amongst the synthesized production of todays hits; The soft flits of organs, the unaffected smooth vocal, and the acoustic guitars jangling away close to a microphone. You can hear the playing.

McVicar is a musician and songwriter based in London, UK, who has been releasing music under a variety of different guises over the past 10 years. Rory first drew notable attention in 2005, when his demo tape gained him fans in Rob da Bank and Huw Stephens. Both played the demo on heavy rotation on their Radio One shows, and Maida Vale sessions and a spot in the annual Festive Fifty rundown followed.

Since then, Rory has released two long players and a clutch of singles and split 7”s on various indie labels. He’s supported the likes of Josh T Pearson, Juana Molina and Bat For Lashes, and performed festival slots in the UK and Europe.

Toothache / Alone I’ll Be‘ is the first music to be released under his own name for six years, following musical projects with Nat Johnson (MSTU) and Emma Kupa (Standard Fare / Mammoth Penguins). It is released on individually lathe cut 7” via Static Caravan Recordings.
