We geared up for the sold out show at U Street Music Hall in Washington D.C.,the headliner? None other than East London native TroyBoi. We came with promises of mind blowing bass and versatile trap, and walked away with so much more.
It is to be said that seldom comes a time when one goes to a sold out headliner show and the opening acts go pound for pound with the headliner, but musical miracles were at work in D.C. that night far more than political miracles. Both opening acts Trophiies and female trap due GypZ were at the top of their game.
Trophiies, a fresh face on the music scene, held down the crowd for two hours as fans slowly filed in through the door. However, holding down the crowd is an understatement as the music he produced and his choice of remixes was incredible. This is a guy you want to be booking for your next house party before he gets famous, that’s for sure. New fans gravitated to the front of the hall and very early on the hall was already packed and in a full rage over his outlandish trap mix.
Second act, female due GypZ, was without a doubt the show stopper and my personal highlight of the night. The two girls, both full of spunk and littered with badassness, finessed the crowd like hard seasoned professionals. All they had to do was take the stage to have the entire crowd up in cheers, and their music was something of a set of trap gods. Their versatile remixes and powerful crowd influence left everyone begging for more. They seemed to be having fun throwing water over the crowd and taking to the front stage to interact with their new and old fans. Watch out for these girls, if they can perform so confidently side by side with TroyBoi they can take over any stage.
The man of the hour TroyBoi, controlled the crowd like only a well versed producer knows how. The completely packed house barely had room to breath, yet everyone seemed to have room to dance. This hard hitting Londoner makes some of the catchiest and unique trap of the day, with versatility, uniqueness and a little bit of gangster under his arm it was easy to see why he had drawn such a large crowd. Of course the fans went wild as he played his chilled out trap track “Afterhours” featuring the dj legend Diplo and singer Nina Sky. An alluring performer and an even better producer, this is one show we we were glad we did not miss.
