I’m always amazed what styles artists manage to craft together to create pop songs. “Mortal Man” by Camarano is a mini-masterpiece molded from hip-hop beats, analogue sounding synths, jazz progressions, organs, dance hall rhythms and harmony-rich and dreamy vocals. You really could pick this song apart for days!
the almost-eponymous project from Perth engineer, writer and producer Mat Cammarano comes after years of Mat working behind the scenes with other artists and we already showered the track “Somebody Else” with love.
Half the genius of “Mortal Man” is the song’s complexity. Rich, deep and warm and rhythmic, you could quite safely say that if this song is on DJ list for the night you’d whack it right in the middle as things are really starting to get going; when minds are at their most open, drinks are flowing and sex drives are bursting at the seams. Don’t get me wrong though, it is not a song that is too complex to enjoy on the face of it. The melodies are easily digestible, great in fact. The energy here is perfect, jumping from beat to beat but never losing the thread of lustful and vibrant excellence. In short- pure class.
Most of all, I am excited to see where this clearly talented and varied artist will go next. Another effort from CAMARANO could go in any stylistic direction next and we’d be convinced for the simple reason that “Mortal Man” covers so much in one song, and with effortless ease and grace.
