Weekend Videos: Nicolah – ‘Out Of The Pie’

Fresh from being directed in Section 28 & the Queer State by Kay Adshead at Alexandra Palace, Nicolah (or Nicola Hogg as she is otherwise known) has got a big week ahead of her with her first headline appearance at St James’ Church, Islington this Friday (7th June).

Originally hailing from Cumbria but now based in London, her single “Out of the Pie” was released last month, accompanied by a video feature full to the brim with ironic references to the discordance she has found between her life and the world she observes around her. The track, a joyously tongue-in-cheek and undeniably catchy number, dances with the themes of life and death.

Nicolah’s influences seem to be clear enough: Elvis Costello meets Suzanne Vega; Billy Bragg colliding with Joni Mitchell. Lyrically she is provoking and incisive (‘The people are living / in a cocoon of oblivion / looking through my eyes’) and the chorus has an anthemic quality that will stay with you long after you’ve finished listening to it. It’s not hard to see why she won the 2018 Mayor of London Busking Competition. She shows serious promise and is definitely one to watch.
