Amaal‘s vocals absolutely glow on her latest release “Coming & Going“, a feeling that is further accentuated by the beautiful sun-drenched video by Kat Webber. The track is the Toronto-based vocalist’s second single this year following close on the heels of “Not What I Thought“, which comfortably sits on 1 million-plus views and has been featured in some of the biggest music publications in the world.
Such success definitely has not come overnight. Amaal and her family escaped Somalia, her birth country, in the 90s to evade the ongoing civil war and perhaps singing was an ideal way to gain comfort in her new Canadian surroundings. Furthermore, with a string of bonafide independent releases under her belt, it is easy to conclude that the vocalist has also put in the hard graft to get to her current spot. And while this is an extraordinary backstory, we are a music blog after all but in this circumstance, the music more than lives up to the narrative.
“Coming & Going” is built on a catchy jazz-infused progression that acts as the perfect foundation for Amaal‘s confident delivery. The vocals are breathy and seductive without sounding superficial. The track boasts one hell of a chorus and a vocal melody that wouldn’t sit out of place on a Solange single.
