With 2020 so close that we can almost feel it we would be remiss if we didn’t cover the releases that left an impression on us these past 12 months Without doubt one of those tracks was the gorgeous “Steady Me” by Mini Trees, a dreamy pop number with an evocative vocal melodies that rush right for your heart and a chorus most artists would offer an artery up for.
Mini Trees is the solo project of Los Angeles-based artist Lexi Vega. Traditionally a drummer (both in the studio and on stage), this project sees her step out from behind the kit to front and play most of the instruments. Working closely with producer Jon Joseph, the resulting 5 songs are wonderfully textured and never fail to convey an emotion. While the aforementioned title tracks stand out due to its sunshine vibes there is plenty to chose from and after multiple listens I found myself captivated and charmed by a different element each time. While there is a unifying aesthetic throughout the release each song offers its own unique spark.
As a special seasonal treat, we also wanted to feature the newly released Christmas song which breaks the mould for what you would consider a holiday track and is much better as a result of it. In contrast with the summery sounds of “Steady Me,” it is fair to say that “Signs & Wonders“, perhaps fitting to the winter months, is a much more melancholic number both in terms of the subject matter. The choice of delicate keyboard sounds and rolling drum patterns works wonders here but the real cherry on top is the addition of the saxophone which, when coupled with the more sombre vocal melodies, makes this instantly sound like a timeless classic for this season.
