Cougar Microbes Selects: Electronic August 2021

A selection of new and/or relevant Electro leaning tracks that have recently left an impression on us!

Son Lux – “Vacancy (No One Near)

Son Lux return with “Vacancy“, the latest single from their ambitious multi-album ‘Tomorrows‘ project. for this track, the Brooklyn trio recruited vocalist Kiah Victoria and the neat interplay between her’s and Ryan Lott‘s voices serves to build an exquisite tension on the track. Over a minimal percussive line and some sparse synths, the track builds and builds but never feels rushed. By the time the final haunting refrain of “can I love you more just by leaving” is repeated in the finale, this 6-minute track will be over in a breeze.

Flight Facilities – “Lights Up” feat. Channel Tres

Flight Facilities recent release “Lights Up” has apparently been created with the explicit aim of getting the proverbial booty moving. The duo are joined by Compton rapper Channel Tres for this one and the match lends a 90s hip hop vibe to the Australian production team’s house heavy influences. The result is a match made in heaven

Massane – “Wild” feat. Colouring

Massane joins forces with UK band Colouring for his latest release. “Wild” also represents the first track from the French producer’s album ‘This Never Happened” and it seems entirely obvious why you would open with this one. Built on continuous keyboard loops, strangely soothing beats and a vocal delivery that is simultaneously compelling and haunting “Wild” is a shiver-inducing song, and for all the right reasons.

Polo & Pan – “Magic”

Whether it was by intention or by accident, it is indisputable that since Polo & Pan releases their successful 2020 debut they have gone on to fill a void and become almost the go-to French electronic duo. “Magic” was originally released by Pilot in 1975. P&P keep much of the original vocal line intact but sees the duo sprinkle some of their fairy dust on the beat giving it a loose and dream-like vibe. Bien fait!

Parra for Cuva – “Manila Palm”

It is no exaggeration to say that we could have selected any number of tracks from Parra for Cuva‘s latest album “Juno“, and it would have still made sense within the context of this segment. The Berlin-based producer recorded in his own studio but opted from sounds deriving from all over the world lending a culture clashing energy to proceedings. “Manila Palm” is perhaps the cornerstone track on this release and is a perfect example of where the German producer excels. There is an unwavering sense of nostalgia that you just can’t shake as the track leads you on a journey.
