Weekend Videos: Death Cab For Cutie – “Here To Forever”

I’m slightly dating myself here, but when I first started listening to Death Cab For Cutie they were a slightly rough-around-the-edges indie upstart destined to make gems for those fortunate enough to have discovered them. Release after release the band has refined their signature sound and I found myself vehemently rooting for them when they bagged a major label deal with 2005’s “Plans”.

For many of their peers, this achievement and the subsequent arena tours, major TV appearances and chart successes (not to mention a marriage with a bonafide Hollywood star) would have been the final triumphant chapter in the story, but DCFC had very different ideas.

This brings us nicely to “Asphalt Meadows”, remarkably the band’s 10th studio album. First teased with the punchy single “Roman Candles”, we now have a further taste of what’s to come with the somewhat upbeat and optimistic “Here To Forever”. Ben Gibbard described “Here To Forever” as a song “about our impermanence and the anxiety of these times”, adding that “it’s also about wanting to believe in something bigger even when it feels like nothing is out there.” These themes are woven throughout the song’s lyrics, delivering a message of hope amidst times of uncertainty.

Here To Forever” is accompanied by a video directed by filmmaker Lance Bangs, whose imagery makes the intense message of the song a little more fun lending an irreverent quality to proceedings.

Here To Forever” is a testament to Death Cab For Cutie‘s continued evolution and their commitment to creating music that resonates with their fans and beyond. It sits comfortably in amongst their previous repertoire and has the potential to become a staple of the band’s live shows and a fan favourite for years to come.
