In our recent full write-up of Danger Mouse and Black Thought‘s superb “Cheat Codes” album, we argued that given their reputation and skill, the two would have had countless options for collaborators. yet it’s a blessing that MF DOOM‘s final recorded output appears on the album.
“Belize,” in particular, is an exceptional track. Danger Mouse‘s soulful production, with its nostalgic brass and hypnotic basslines, serves as the perfect backdrop for Black Thought‘s precise wording and MF DOOM‘s stream-of-consciousness delivery. The absence of a chorus is no issue as the two rappers, considered among the greatest of all time, keep the listener captivated throughout the song.
The accompanying black and white video, directed by UNCANNY and shot by Danger Mouse, serves as a poignant tribute to MF DOOM, highlighting his absence in a visually striking yet simple way.
The fact that Danger Mouse returns to producing a hip-hop album over 15 years after the iconic DANGERDOOM project with MF DOOM, creates a sense of closure for fans. Although it’s only for one track, it feels like a fitting tribute to a genius friend.
