Cougar Microbes Selects: Electronic January 2023

A selection of new and/or relevant electro-leaning tracks that have recently left an impression on us.

Happy fucking new year!

Sofi Tukker – “Chasing Cars

Sofi Tukker ended 2022 with a beautiful cover of Snow Patrol’s classic “Chasing Cars” The duo has taken a bold step in covering such an iconic song, and it has paid off. The vocals are perfectly delivered and are sure to pull at the heartstrings of those who are familiar with the original song, and it may also serve to introduce others to the track for the first time.

Teenage Sequence – “D.I.S. Connect

We last caught up with London’s Teenage Sequence with the release of the single “All This Art”, a direct attack on the underlying racism in the UK music industry delivered (with tongue firmly in cheek). Now the one-man band returns with “D.I.S. Connect” – a captivating blend of synths and fat disco bass, with a story about navigating the tumultuous dating world as a person of colour. Drawing on personal experiences as well as conversations with his friends, Teenage Sequence manages to deliver a pulsating dance track that keeps your feet moving, despite the serious subject matter. “D.I.S. Connect” is another irresistible addition to his budding discography, and it’s not to be missed.

SBTRKT – “Forward”

SBTRKT has done it again with their latest release, “Forward” featuring LEILAH. The dreamy track was first previewed in Drake and 21 Savage’s “Jimmy Cooks” music video, and since then, fans have been eagerly anticipating its release. The song was originally intended to be an album track, but it resonated so widely that SBTRKT decided to release it as a single. It’s not hard to see why it’s been so popular. The track swirls and twinkles with evocative grace, and LEILAH’s vocals add an extra layer of beauty to an already stunning piece. We can’t wait to see what SBTRKT has in store for the upcoming album, set for release in 2023.

Joja Smith – “Rose Rouge” (Joy Orbison Remix)

Joy Orbison’s remix of Jorja Smith’s ‘Rose Rouge’ takes the classic St Germain track into a new direction, incorporating his signature UK garage sound. An array of electronic orchestral elements replace the original jazz ensemble, and Jorja’s sultry vocals are exposed raw revealing them anew in a new beauty. The track possesses a hypnotic quality with a bass build-up that gives you chills. The lyrics “I want you to get together” repeat throughout the track, making it an instant dancefloor favourite. This remix has been released on a limited run of heavyweight etched black vinyl exclusively for Record Store Day 2022.

Romy – “Strong”

Romy’s single “Strong” is an emotional club banger that combines grief with euphoria. This track is described by the artist as ‘emotional music to dance to‘, with a lively beat that contrasts with its underlying theme of loss. The song explores the personal grief Romy and her cousin Luis experienced after losing their respective mothers when they were young. The accompanying music video, directed by Romy‘s wife Vic Lentaigne, features Luis hugging Romy in the middle of a nightclub dance floor, capturing the essence of the song. Having already worked together on her debut single “LifetimeRomy chose to turn to Fred Again… again for this one and the result is a powerful and personal track that combines deep emotions with dancefloor euphoria.
