“We Cry Together” is one of the most polarizing moments from Kendrick Lamar’s latest album, “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers”. The track takes its listener on an emotionally charged narrative as accusations are thrown back and forth in what appears to be a highly toxic relationship.
On the 1st of September Lamar dropped into a powerful six-minute video which he directed alongside Jake Schreier and Dave Free. Shot in one take, the most striking thing is that instead of using the playback from the original recording they opted to re-record the audio live resulting in a raw and genuine feel that is hard to shake off.
The video stars Taylour Paige, who also features in the song, and more than holds her own in this power struggle. Her razor-sharp comebacks momentarily pit Kendrick in the role of the villain in his own story.
The video is an exceptional piece of work that showcases Kendrick Lamar’s artistic depth and creativity. It is far from a comfortable viewing and/or listening experience, but great art doesn’t necessarily have to put you at ease. It has to leave a lasting impression
