Brighton‘s Self Torque, the brainchild of Gabriel A. Pentin, returns with the latest single and video “No Rest.” Following the positive reception of the debut single, ‘Impending Sense Of Doom,’ Pentin unleashed the 5-track EP fittingly titled ‘No Rest For The Depressed” at the end of 2023, setting himself up nicely for the year to come.
“No Rest” bursts into your headphones, offering fervour and excitement from the get-go. The distinctive blend of indie, alternative, and punk influences shines through, creating a track that’s infectious and dynamic. Pentin cites Hot Snakes as an influence, but I also hear shades of The Thermals in the catchy hooks and the raw, emotional vocal delivery.
The video mirrors the themes of frustration and desperation present in the lyrics, showing Pentin wandering somewhat aimlessly at night, staring into shop windows. There might be a cheeky critique of consumerism, showing Pentin as someone unbothered by such pursuits.
Regardless, there’s no denying the track’s infectious charm; Pentin‘s passion is evident in every note, and his ability to get it all off his chest in under 3 minutes is sure to leave you wanting more.
Self Torque‘s “No Rest” is the anthem for the restless you didn’t know you needed.
