Brooklyn’s Ok Cowgirl hit big with their latest single, “Larry David”, a spunky, distorted gem that’s both cathartic and euphoric despite its seemingly pessimistic outlook. The song bursts with energy, powered by Leah Lavigne‘s stunning vocals and fancy guitar work on a suitably beaten-up Telecaster. It grabs you by the collar and pulls you into its wild ride, making you feel oddly uplifted despite its disillusioned mantra. The song comes out of the speakers like Kramer bursting into a room – energetic, unexpected, and impossible to ignore.
The video, directed by Evan Murray, is a delightful visual treat. The band, decked out as the eponymous curmudgeon himself takes on Larry David’s various pissed-off poses with aplomb. Watching them channel the iconic writer/comedian’s exasperation is a joy – it’s not hard to imagine Larry himself getting a kick out of this tribute (although not in character).
Formed in 2018, Ok Cowgirl comprises Leah Lavigne (singer/songwriter), Jake Sabinsky (lead guitarist), John Miller (guitar and synth), Ryan Work (bassist), and Matt Birkenholz (drummer). Their chemistry is palpable in “Larry David”, where every element clicks into place with effortless synergy into something pretty good. Pret-tay pret-tay pret-tay good.
The track was born from a particularly rough day, as Lavigne recounts. What began as a jam session to release tension evolved into a furious anthem, featuring a gang vocal shouting, “Everything is fucked.” The lyrics feel like an epic George Costanza rant, full of frustration and wit.
“Larry David” is part of their upcoming debut LP, ‘Couldn’t Save Us From My Gut’, set to release on 16th August via Easy Does It. The album promises to explore a range of emotions and sounds, from fuzz-drenched power chords to dreamy synths. Under the guidance of producer Alex Farrar, the band has embraced their dynamic range, crafting songs that are as emotionally resonant as they are musically varied. It’s easy to picture Elaine joyously (and badly) dancing to these tracks’ infectious rhythm and rebellious spirit.
The track’s “everything is fucked” mantra and its stomping tempo provide a perfect outlet for the listener’s tensions, aligning seamlessly with the universal sentiment of frustration and release. It follows the tranquil “Forever” and the electrifying “Little Splinters”, showcasing the band’s ability to balance introspective lyrics with powerful, upbeat arrangements.
In “Larry David”, Ok Cowgirl offers a raucous yet heartfelt anthem for anyone feeling the weight of the world. It’s a song that invites you to scream along, dance out your frustrations, and ultimately find a sense of shared joy in the chaos
As Larry might say, “Hey, let me ask you something… why isn’t more music this exciting?”
