Weekend Videos: The Smile – “Don’t Get Me Started”

Not satisfied with releasing their album of the year contender back in March, The Smile—featuring Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner—returns with the tantalising new release Don’t Get Me Started. Avid fans will recognise this from their live shows.

Don’t Get Me Started is anchored by a haunting synth sequence that establishes a shadowy atmosphere. Yorke‘s vocals, imbued with a sense of lament, weave seamlessly into this ominous backdrop. As the track progresses, elements like tribal drums and a deep electronic bass gradually blend into the mix, creating a rich and textured soundscape. These components, while seemingly disparate, fuse together to enhance the song’s evocative power.

The accompanying video, directed by Weirdcore—known for his work with Aphex Twin, Charli XCX, and Radiohead—mirrors the track’s trippy, glitchy aura. The video presents a surreal, futuristic urban chase that adds a compelling visual layer to the song. Weirdcore‘s direction enhances the track’s immersive quality, creating a visual experience that complements the music’s otherworldly essence.

The Smile - Don't Get Me Started promo

Lyrically, “Don’t Get Me Started” delves into themes of self-defence and existential contemplation. Yorke sings, “I’m not the killer / Don’t get me started,” and “Nothing is triggered / Nothing is silent,” delivering these lines with his signature evocative touch, reflecting a sense of defiance and introspection

“Don’t Get Me Started” was surprise-released as part of a limited edition 12″ vinyl available in select records stores.. This release, which also includes the track “The Slip”, points to the fact that The Smile‘s are in a particularly prolific period. Following the recent health scare of Jonny Greenwood, which led to the cancellation of several shows—including one in Munich that I had tickets for—it’s great to receive some positive news from the band.

In a year already rich with musical highs, “Don’t Get Me Started” shows that The Smile‘s ability to push their sound while staying true to their core sound. Crucially, they continue to sound like nothing else that is being released at the moment.
